Who can name the house style on this Victorian beauty?
Perched on the highest hill in the coastal village of Noank, Connecticut, you will find this absolutely enchanting gingerbread Victorian mansion.
The house was built in 1884 for Deacon Robert Palmer (1825-1913), a wealthy man who wasn’t only deacon of the village`s Baptist church, he was the owner of a flourishing shipyard, and it was his shipyard workers who built him, with loving care, a house he could be proud of! Robert ran the shipyard in town first with his brother, and then with his son.
During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries the shipyard was the largest facility for building and repair of wooden vessels in southern New England, employing over 300 men. The yard specialized in building railroad car floats, schooner barges, and dump scows as well as fishing smacks. Robert Palmer and Son went out of business in 1914 with the passing of the Robert.
The Stick style mansion with mansard roofed tower remained in the Palmer family until the early 2000s when it sold and was restored to her former glory. The residence features exposed rafters, a pagoda-like second story balcony, a frieze with geometric cut-outs, and a wrap-around porch which provides sweeping views of the ocean.
I can only imagine how beautiful this old Victorian is on the inside!

I found this 1968 postcard of the Steamship Sabino to go along with my recent purchase of a vintage felt pennant. Here’s some of the history that I shared on the previous post:
Sabino (pronounced Sah-BYE-No) is America`s oldest regularly operating coal-powered steamboat. It is one of only two surviving members of the American mosquito fleet and was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1992.
Sabino began her career in 1908 as "Tourist," a ferry owned by LaForest "Foss" Etheridge on the Damariscotta River in Maine. After sinking in 1918 and being salvaged, she was sold to the Popham Beach Steamboat Company on the Kennebec River in 1921 and renamed Sabino in honor of Abenaki sagamore Sabenoa.
Sabino was bought by Cape Shore Ferry Company in Portland, Maine, in 1927 and transported passengers to the Casco Bay islands. In 1935 she was sold to Casco Bay Lines. Still, she was put into the reserve fleet until 1956, when she was returned to ferry service due to another ferry accident.
In 1958, she was sold to Philip and Irene Corbin of Salisbury, Massachusetts. The Corbin family spent significant time repairing the vessel and bringing her up to Coast Guard regulations for a passenger`s vessel. In 1971, the Sabino was sold to C. Bruce Brown, Joseph Pulvino, and Philip Corbin`s son Jim, doing business as Steamship Sabino Inc.
The Sabino started operating on the Merrimack River on Memorial Day, running between Newburyport, Black Rocks in Salisbury Beach, and Merrimac. On high tides, it could reach Haverhill. Jazz cruises were available both day and night until 1974, when it was leased to Mystic Seaport Museum for a year to gauge interest.
During the voyage from Newburyport to Mystic Seaport, the Sabino was almost lost due to large waves that stirred up coal and blocked the bilge pumps, causing the engine room to flood. However, a gasoline pump kept her afloat, and she was pulled from the water in Groton, Connecticut. The Mystic Seaport shipyard experts restored her, and she became a popular exhibit, prompting the museum to purchase her. Under the museum`s care, Sabino was fully restored and continues to operate as a working exhibit, offering rides to visitors.

Back in the depths of 2020’s quarantine when I (well, we) couldn’t go out and see the world for a year, I started to miss the familiar and nearby places me and my loved ones would frequent. I had taken them for granted, seeing them as the boring and monotonous places where nothing new could be done or explored, since after a while of living in a place of course you get used to it and most things lose their spark of excitement... But then during quarantine, they became the familiar and safe places I yearned to visit again.
In the long stretches of days where it felt like I had all the time in the world, I started doing research on these familiar places, somewhat touring them digitally. I had lived in southern CT for so long and visited so many parts of CT in my entire life of living there, but I had never actually learned about the history of my hometown and nearby places. I became inspired by Connecticut’s quiet quaintness and drew little oc’s based off some of my favorite memories of those places! I’m thinking of them as little pixies, bringing my fondest memories into physical forms as neat lil guys. And I have plenty more in mind to draw so look out for those ;0
